  • NASASpaceflight.com: Roscosmos Launches Progress MS-17 to ISS
  • Roskosmos: MS-17 tested some elements of a new single-orbit rendezvous flight plan. “After the completion of the active phase of injection, Progress MS-17 entered a low reference orbit and began to implement the standard program of a two-day (33-orbit) flight to the ISS, which is in a higher circular orbit. As a result of a series of accelerating pulses from the rendezvous-correcting propulsion system, the spacecraft gradually increased the orbit altitude and, at the 32nd orbit, switched to the autonomous rendezvous mode to carry out the calculated docking with the Station. At the stage of short-range guidance, Progress MS-17 TGK entered the so-called coelliptical orbit, characterized by a constant difference in altitude with the ISS orbit, in which it was about half a turn until the optimal impulse was executed when switching to the station’s intercept trajectory. This approach is supposed to be used in a single-orbit rendezvous scheme with the use of quasi-coplanar launch into the reference orbit, which allows transport vehicles to reach the ISS without additional power consumption in just 90-120 minutes after launch. Further development of the elements of the single-turn circuit is planned to be continued in the next supply missions for Progress MS.”

  • ТАСС: “The inscription «Донбасс», ‘Donbass,’ will be printed on the second stage of the Soyuz-2.1a launch vehicle, designed to launch the Progress MS-20 cargo spacecraft, and the head fairing will be marked with the flags of the DPR and LPR. This is stated in the message of Roscosmos distributed on Wednesday. ‘The second stage of the Soyuz-2.1a missile will be marked with the inscription ‘Donbass,’ and on the head fairing – the flags of the DPR, LPR and the image of a brave Ukrainian grandmother who refused to accept products from the military Armed Forces of Ukraine with the flag of the USSR. The heroic act of an elderly woman inspired many artists and masters,’ Roscosmos said in a statement. This decision was made in response to a letter from the head of the DPR Denis Pushilin, who asked the General Director of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin to devote one of the nearest launches to the republic’s struggle for peace, freedom and security. He also proposed to consider the possibility of the presence of children of the DPR at the cosmodrome and sending the flag of the republic to the ISS. Earlier, a video was widely distributed on social networks, in the footage of which an elderly woman with a red banner meets Ukrainian servicemen, mistook them for the Russian military. APU fighter gives his grandmother a package of groceries, but at the same time takes away and tramples the flag. Then an elderly woman refuses to take food and demands to return the banner for which her parents fought.”

  • Roskosmos, 11/2/2022: “Sergei Krikalyov, Executive Director for Manned Space Programs of the Roscosmos State Corporation, spoke about the situation with the Progress MS-21 cargo spacecraft at the International Space Station. ‘On a cargo ship, which has been docked to the station for several months, there was a coolant leak from the thermal control system. The situation is somewhat similar to the one that happened with the Soyuz MS-22 manned spacecraft in mid-December 2022,’ he said. According to him, at present, experts are thinking about how to examine in detail the leak on the Progress MS-21 radiator in order to find out the cause of its occurrence. ‘In parallel, just like with the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft, an analysis of the possible cause of the leak will now be carried out in terms of radiator assembly technologies, materials used and preparation of the spacecraft for launch. When it was analyzed, it looked similar to what happened to Soyuz MS-22,’ he said. Specialists need to make sure that this is not a systematic error, because it may affect the following ships. ‘We need to conduct a deep analysis to make sure that this reason does not extend to similar designs on future launches. This is the most important task that will face us,’ explained Krikalyov. He noted that a commission has already begun to work, which will analyze all possible options for the causes of this leak. So far, according to him, the situation with Progress MS-21 has not led to a change in the ISS flight program. ‘The Progress MS-21 spacecraft was supposed to be undocked and descent from orbit two days before the launch of the Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft, so this will not affect the work of the crew, this ship has already served its time,’ said Krikalyov.”
  • Roskosmos, 18/2/2023: “After undocking from Poisk, a survey of the outer surface of MS-21 was carried out. No visual damage was found. Deorbiting has been postponed. The State Commission will decide today on the further flight program of the spacecraft. Two options are being considered: its docking to Prichal for further clarification of the cause of the depressurization of the ship’s thermal control system, or deorbiting.” They decided to deorbit MS-21.
  • Roscomsos, 21/2/2023: “Preliminary conclusions: damage to Progress MS-21, similar to Soyuz MS-22, was caused by an external influence. […] Such conclusions were made on the basis of photographs that show changes on the outer surface of the ship, including on the radiator of the instrument-aggregate compartment and solar panels. Holes were found on them that were not detected either during the manufacture of Progress MS-21 at the plant, or during its preparation for launch at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, or during the flight and docking of the spacecraft with the ISS. In addition, in order to exclude the version of a manufacturing defect, RKK Energiya analyzed the history of comments on the thermal control system of the Soyuz and Progress spacecraft over the past 15 years. ‘Remarks that could lead to such an emergency situation were not found. The reliability reserve of the thermal control system is one year from the date of launch of the ship, so the system is guaranteed to be reliable in the design conditions of its operation,’ the report stated. Experts continue to analyze the information received. It is also planned to conduct a series of ground experiments to simulate damage similar to what was detected on the Progress MS-21. This will help to finally check all versions and develop measures to counter such threats in the development and production of spacecraft and vehicles.”

  • Roskosmos: “The Progress MS-28 will deliver 2,621 kg of cargo to the International Space Station, including 1,201 kg of apparatus and equipment for station systems, packing for scientific experiments, clothing, food, medical and sanitary products for the crew of the 71st long-duration mission expedition, 950 kg of fuel to refuel the station, 420 kg of drinking water for the cosmonauts and 50 kg of nitrogen to replenish the ISS atmosphere. Among the cargo is the SPIN-X1-MVN X-ray spectrometer/рентгеновский спектрометр СПИН-X1-МВН, created at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences as part of the All Sky Monitor/«Монитор всего неба» experiment. During a spacewalk under the Russian program, it is planned to be installed on the outer surface of Zvezda. Using the spectrometer, scientists will conduct periodic almost complete surveys of the celestial sphere (84%) in the X-ray wavelength range every 72 days for three years (a total of 15 such surveys are expected to be completed). To conduct new scientific experiments “Forced expiration”/«Форсированный выдох» (assessment of the ventilatory function of the lungs in long-term space flight) and “Endothelium”/«Эндотелий» (study of the role of the Earth’s geomagnetosphere in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases), an acoustic sensor for recording forced expiration noises in cosmonauts and a measurement complex were sent, respectively. pulse wave velocity and assessment of endothelial function in astronauts. The ship also contains installations for the experiments ‘Aseptic,’ ‘Biodegradation,’ ‘Virtual,’ ‘Endurance,’ ‘Lasma,’ ‘Neuroimmunity’ and ‘Photobioreactor’/«Асептик», «Биодеградация», «Виртуал», «Выносливость», «Лазма», «Нейроиммунитет» и «Фотобиореактор». The Soyuz-2.1a launch vehicle used to launch the Progress MS-28 spacecraft featured images dedicated to the 245th anniversary of the Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography and the International Robot Battle Championship.”

Notes
  • The Progress ships are launched on a Soyuz-type rocket from one of two adjacent launch complexes at Baikonur Cosmodrome: Area 1/5 (45°55′12″N, 63°20′1.2″E) – launch pad 5 in Area 1, nicknamed “Gagarin’s Pad” (Soyuz-U and Soyuz-FG rockets), and Area 31/6 (45°59′45.6″N, 63°33′50.4″E) – launch pad 6 in Area 31 (Soyuz-U, Soyuz-FG and Soyuz-2 rockets). (пл., pl. is an abbreviation of площадь, ploshchad’ which means pad, area, floor space, etc.). After being unloaded of their supplies, docked for several months and being filled with rubbish, the Progress ships are destroyed after re-entry into the atmosphere and burn up over the ocean. Sometimes they remain in autonomous orbit for a few days or weeks in order to perform various onboard experiments (indicated by a gap between undocking and deorbit).
  • Progress M ships are designated 7K-TGM-number; M-1 ships are 7K-TGM1-number.
  • The designation Progress M-XXM (where XX = 01, 02, 03 etc.) has been chosen for Progress M cargo ships with a new onboard computer, TsVM-101, a digital telemetry system. The Progress M cargo ships used an old onboard computer, Argon-16. Progress M-01M (№ 401) was the first to launch with the new computer.
  • Zvezda has its aft (rear) port available for Progress and Soyuz dockings; Pirs and Zarya each have a nadir (bottom) port; Poisk a zenith port.
  • Launch dates are in UTC/GMT time (TsUP in Moscow was 4 hours ahead – Russia went to year-round Standard Time from 26/10/2014, which is UTC +3 hours).
